First Announcement :

Self Organization and Transport in Electromagnetic Turbulence

2 -20 July 2001 Aix-en-Provence, France

Introduction

This initiative aims at organizing theory working groups on well focused subjects in magnetized plasma physics. The meetings will gather 15 to 20 experts during three to four weeks. The objective is three fold. First, the participants will present the most recent results in the field and promote new ideas. Secondly sub-groups will be formed and start new common works on the subject. In this regard, it is expected that the participants will cover a broad spectrum of expertise. The third objective is to provide educational training for PHD and post-doc students. The first meeting will be organized from July 2nd to July 20th 2001 in Aix en Provence. The subject will be "Self Organization and Transport in Electromagnetic Turbulence". This choice is motivated by the importance of the electromagnetic effects for turbulent transport in plasmas (in particular for fusion plasmas). Self-organization via the turbulent generation of macroscopic fields is also a key issue in plasma physics. The subject covers several topics as the direct or indirect effects of magnetic fluctuations on turbulent transport, self-regulation processes in an electromagnetic turbulence, interplay between macroscopic MHD instabilities and turbulence, and turbulent generation of mesoscale magnetic and velocity fields. Participants will come from various fields of research, namely fusion, space and astrophysics. Each half-day of the meeting will start with an extensive talk or lecture given by each participant. The rest of the day will be shared between individual work and discussions in working groups. It is planned to produce written contribution(s) publishable in a journal.

Site

These meetings will be organized jointly by the LPIIM (CNRS-University of Provence) and CEA Cadarache. The first meeting will be organized on the campus of University of Provence, located in Aix-en-Provence. Offices and microcomputers connected to the network will be available. Aix-en Provence is a nice city in Provence, close to the "Luberon" hills and vineyards. Many festivals take place in Provence on July, in particular the "Festival d'Art Dramatique" in Avignon and the "Festival d'Art Lyrique" in Aix en Provence.

Accommodation

Due to the Aix Festival, a limited number of rooms has been booked. Three possibilities are available within a walking distance to the campus : two hotels and one residence. The residence is suitable for a family stay.
